What is UNK Residence Life?
UNK Residence Life provides on-campus housing options designed to enhance the student experience by fostering a sense of community, promoting academic success, and providing support services. Living on campus gives students access to convenient amenities, social engagement opportunities, and academic resources that contribute to a successful college experience.

Getting Involved in Residence Life
Living on campus provides numerous opportunities for students to engage with their peers and campus life, including:
- Residence Hall Association (RHA) Links to an external site. – A student-run organization that represents residents and plans social events.
- Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) Links to an external site. – Special-interest communities that group students with shared academic or personal interests.
- Residence Life Events & Programs – Social gatherings, educational workshops, and fun activities designed to build community.
What is a Resident Assistant (RA)?
A Resident Assistant (RA) is a student leader who lives in the residence halls and is responsible for building community, enforcing policies, and providing support to residents. RAs are trained in conflict resolution, mental health support, and university resources. RA applications are available on Handshake beginning at the later part of November.
How a Resident Assistant Can Help Students

Safety and Security – RAs do multiple rounds each night to ensure safety equipment is in place, the building is secure and works with UNKPD for emergencies.

Leadership Development – Organize events to assist and mentor new students in the community.

Mental Health Advocates – Trained by certified counselors, the RA team helps encourage healthy habits and responds to CARE requests from campus.

Bystander Interventionists – The RA team is trained in the art of intervening in situations where harm might be present.

Roommate/Community Support – Help students be proactive in working with their roommates and community members before disagreements become to difficult to resolve.

Campus Resource Connection – Directs students to university services like counseling, success hub, and health services.
- Emergency Assistance – Acts as a first point of contact in case of emergencies or issues in the residence halls.
What is a Residence Hall Coordinator
The RA team has a full-time supervisor called a Residence Hall Coordinator (RHC). This person is a full-time professional that lives on campus and has an office in the area. Most offices are on the first floor of the buildings, your RA can direct you to their location if you need an extra support.
What First-Year Students Should Know About Residence Life

- Roommate Agreements Links to an external site. – Roommates complete an agreement to set expectations for shared living spaces.
- Dining Options – Meal plans are available for students, with dining halls conveniently located near residence halls.
- Laundry Links to an external site. & Facilities – Most residence halls provide laundry facilities, study lounges, and common areas for socializing.
- Safety & Security Links to an external site. – Residence halls are secured with key card access, and RAs and campus security are available to ensure student safety.
- Work Requests Links to an external site. – If you have any issues with your residence hall room, bathroom, common area, or custodial needs, you can contact facilities to resolve it.
- Lofts & Beds Links to an external site. – Standard beds can be raised, lofted, or bunked. You can rent a loft kit from UNK Residence Life.
